Features & Extras
Big Church is a dating site for Christians.

I noted that there are no options for same-sex searches (hey, there are plenty of bi and gay Christians out there). I also think it's funny that they include "Amish" as a denomination; how many Amish have PCs?

Features include a chatroom and instant messenger program, both of which are available to free members. But only paid members see people's photos.

I interviewed G.G., a 32-year-old hetero woman in the U.K. She uses the site mainly for socializing. "As a chat site, I think it's a fairly good place to be," but she continued, "I'm a free member. I refuse to pay, because I don't see people of quality joining up." Paid members see others' pictures and get messages.

"The private chat feature doesn't work at all for me.... it quite often blanks out, or doesn't connect, or doesn't tell you the other person is gone. I would prefer to have a way to chat to someone in the room rather than have to go out and open the private message centre. That would make it easier to follow a conversation, I have found, just from other places I have chatted."

G.G. had some problems with con artists. "A lot of African men have been alerted to this site and they come and approach women, and tell them they love them and then ask for an email address straight away. Some people come begging for money. I think there should be a way of giving out an email address without others seeing it and responding inappropriately." She has also had negative experiences in the love department. "I've met a lot of great people, but then I started to get to know a guy who was just as abusive as the next. Just because someone's on a Christian site doesn’t mean he's an angel. I think, for me, I have decided that people are okay to chat with, but it's much better to know someone you are going to fall in love with when you spend time with them in person."
